Frequently Asked Questions

Why does WLC charge a membership fee?
Education is our priority. The small fee helps offset some costs WLC incurs to bring online classes to those who need them. We know that there are some families who rely on our online classes for their children's education. All fees charged by WLC are directly used to continue offering online classes.
*The application fee of $50 per family is non-refundable. This rate may change each year. Choosing the "auto renewal" will help you, not only being convenient, but locking in the rate.

Are there hidden fees?
There are no hidden fees for WLC.
What is required for my child's class?
As all of our classes are offered online, an internet connection is required. A webcam, either one built into the computer or separate device, and audio capability are necessary. Our classes are live via video and they require the student to be visible and audible to the teacher and classmates. To participate in the classes, a free account will need to be created through Canvas. (Canvas has changed some of its features with the increase of online classes. If you already have an account with Canvas through a different organization you may need to create a new account specifically to use with WLC.) After registration is complete, an initial email is sent with all the information needed to get started in the class. You can find the specific requirements for each class within the course description or by emailing [email protected] for more information.

How many kids will be in a class?
We want to foster positive relationships with the students and families that take our classes. In order to facilitate this we will limit our class size to 12 students per course.
Please note: Some courses may have smaller classes to better facilitate learning of the subject area. Be sure to read the course description for the maximum class size.

Can my child work through the class slower/faster?
Our classes are designed to foster relationships between the student and the material, but also with their classmates and teacher. Sometimes a child may struggle with the material and need just a little longer to work through a class. Working through a class faster can hinder this aspect, but we do understand that some kids just make connections quicker. Please reach out to us at [email protected] to discuss options.
Some of our teachers have opted to offer correspondence courses for their subject.

How are the kids graded? Do you send out report cards?
We do not give standard grades until the high school grades (9+). Each student is assessed by their participation in the class as a whole. We find that assessment is more than getting a percentage correct on a test and therefore we pay attention to how the student is able to tell what they know in class, through their written work, their discussions, and also feedback from parents. There may be open-ended exams given in the courses which will also lend to the assessment. We send out narrative report cards. These will include standard grades for high school grades.
Course instructors can suggest grades if you need them.

What does "Form IA," "Form V," and others mean?
Forms relate (approximately) to grades as follows:
Form I- grades 1-3 Form IV- grades 9-10
Form II- grades 4-6 Form V- grade 11
Form III- grades 7-8/9 Form VI- grade 12
You will generally see the suffix of "A" or "B" for Forms I through III. This refers to the lower or upper grade within the Form. "Form IA" refers to grade 3 generally. "Form IIIB" would refer to grade 7. You can think of the suffixes as A: "Advancing to the next Form soon" or B: "Beginning the present Form."
Grades 2, 5, and 8 may be labeled as either "A" or "B" as determined by the teacher.

What does "Honors Option" mean?
Our courses with "Honors Option" are designed for students with an intense interest in the subject. This option is not just more reading books added to the regular schedule. It will require a desire on the student's part to dig deeper into the subject through discussion, critical reading, writing, and research. The number of Honors Option students per class will be small and the instructor will be available every step of the way. If you still have questions, contact us!
Do you supply transcripts?
We are happy to offer transcript service for our high school students. There is a $25 fee per family for this service. Without this service each student will receive course completion documentation along with a narrative assessment at the end of the course. You can view a sample transcript (scroll down).
What is the discount for families with multiple children?
We do not have discounts on our courses. All of our courses are on a donation basis. We are serious about offering this to all children.
How do I pay for the classes? I don't see prices!
You will receive an email from WLC after you complete the registration for the courses you would like your children to be enrolled. All courses are offered on a donation basis. When you receive your registration, there will be a link for submitting a donation if you are able to do so.
Do you offer a payment plan?
We are serious about offering this to all children. All of our courses are on a donation basis and donations can be made at any time.
Can I get a refund if we decide not to complete the class?
As all of our courses are on a donation basis, we do not give refunds for courses.
This looks like a great program! I do not have children to enroll but I'd love to help others be able to take classes. How can I do that?
We greatly appreciate your encouragement and desire to help! All funds generated by and for Wildwood Community School are invested right back into the school. You can become a Supporting Member for $25 a year. You can also opt to give a tax deductible donation through Zeffy (no extra fees for you or WCS) and that can go towards the fee for one or more children to take a class. Thank you for your support! Use the Donate Now button below to begin that process.
